The company he founded, Hoppy Lobby, deals with arts and crafts, floral, home accents, and related items. It does not seem to pass itself off a religious store, which it clearly isn’t. The owner simply wants his Christian beliefs applied to his business dealings. So much so that Christian music is played in all the stores. The stores are also closed on Sundays in keeping with Green’s religious beliefs.
Those principles have brought him business and financial success. Starting from a modest store he opened in 1973 in North Oklahoma City, Hobby Lobby now comprises 492 stores located in forty states. The company registered revenues of $2.2 billion in 2009 with nineteen thousand employees.
Mr. Green has also become very wealthy, with a net worth $4 billion as of September 2011. He is a known donor to religious institutions and has given children in one hundred countries over half a billion Gospel booklets. Hobby Lobby is also generous with its wages.
Being religiously neutral seems to be politically correct in this day and age. You don’t find any well-known business school advocating Christian principles for running a huge business. Some have even questioned Green’s true motives, but he has become a billionaire without having to compromise his principles.
