The history of the company goes back to the year 1929 with the founding of Burn-up & Sims. The latter is a company that offers design, construction and maintenance services to both the telephone and utilities industries. Another predecessor of MasTec is Church & Tower, which was created in 1968. It has been involved in the construction and servicing of telephone networks in Miami and in Puerto Rico. It was Jorge Mas Canosa who helped saved the business when Church & Tower overextended in Puerto Rico and could no longer deliver the telephone-infrastructure networks needed in Miami. In exchange for salvaging the business, Canosa was granted ownership of CTF and started managing the business in 1969.
With his strong resolve of running the business Jorge Mas Canosa studied the business and even went to as far as climbing down ditches and manholes to observe the workers’ method of construction. On March 11, 1994, CTF was able to acquire a substantial 65% of the common stocks of Burnup & Sims, Inc. The acquisition was later on followed by the company’s name change to MasTec, Inc. to also reflect the new owners of the business. As founder of the new venture, he named his son Jorge Mas as the president and CEO.
Today, the business is considered as a “minority business enterprise” by the National Minority Suppliers Development Council (NMSDC). With this distinction, the company is able to get a firm grip on the industries it serves. MasTec markets under the following brand names, Power Partners, Wanzek, ADVent, Advanced Technologies, Pumpco, nsoro, Precision Pipeline, Cam Communications, Globetec, Optima Network Services and 3 PhaseLine.
