Dr. Ibrahim no longer holds ownership of Celtel. He sold the company in 2005 for $3.4 billion, and chose to focus on transforming governance of Africa through his Foundation. The Mo Ibrahim Foundation to change the corrupt African leadership by awarding $5 million to heads of state that improve health and education in Africa by developing the economy, improving security, and promoting a democratic way of transferring power. In addition to the 5 million dollars, the chosen heads of state will also receive $200,000 every year for the rest of their life.
Forbes has included Dr. Ibrahim in their list of the world’s most powerful entrepreneurs. He is reported to have a net worth of $1.8 billion. Dr. Ibrahim is a member of The Giving Pledge, a charitable organization whose members pledge to donate half of their entire wealth to charity.
