Asus was founded in 1990 by T.H. Tung, Ted Hsu, M.T. Liao and Wayne Hsieh, all computer engineers. It took some time, restructuring, reviewing and establishing operations before Asus finally began its ascent towards the top rung. The company broke into the desktop computer business and by the 2000's, was doing quick business in LCD television screens, tablet computers, laptops and notebook computers, DVD players and Blu-ray drives. The company's products include mobile phones, network equipment, motherboards, computer monitors, computer components, hard drives, data storage devices, servers, workstations, cooling items and multimedia items. Based in Taipei, Taiwan, and with facilities in China, Mexico, the Czech Republic and other areas in Taiwan, Asus also makes parts for similar industry giants like Dell, Apple and Hewlett-Packard.
The company now works with some 400 service partners in 32 countries, making some two million motherboards and 150,000 notebook computer units every month. Asus' success is such that BusinessWeek has included it in its list of “Asia's Top 10 IT Companies,” and the Wall Street Journal Asia has put it at number one for quality of products and excellence in service. Aside from that, Asus, under the guidance of Chairman Jonney Shih and CEO Jerry Shen, has been practicing corporate responsibility in its “PC Recycling for a Brighter Future” campaign, wherein over 1,200 computers, laptops, notebooks and LCD monitors were repaired and donated to 122 schools, five ethnic communities and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Stem Cells Center in Taiwan.
