Kalifowitz discovered the potential for success in the music business when he was 13. His friends had a band and wanted to enter a local band competition. He arranged everything from getting the application form, filling it out and hand delivering it to the organizers. This made him realize that there was a legitimate career path in this side of the music industry. Kalifowitz honed his skills working for music industry giants Virgin Records and Sprint Music Publishing before taking on the role of Downtown’s president.
Today, Kalifowitz is a partner at Downtown Music, LLC, the parent company of Downtown Music Publishing and Downtown Records. Downtown Records is made up of the Downtown and Mercer Street Imprints, as well as joint venture partners Fools Gold, Dim Mak, and Mad Decent Records, all of which have released music from groundbreaking new artists and music legends alike. He also is the co-founder of SongTrust, a site that allows up and coming artists and song writers manage their music publishing rights and get paid the royalties they deserve.
Kalifowitz’ success in the music industry has earned him a number of accolades including being a part of Billboard Magazine’s 30 Under 30 Faces to Watch back in 2005, and more recently Kalifowitz became part of Crain’s New York’s Class of 2011 of the 40 Under 40 Rising Stars of New York Business.
